Paraguay. ACRONET station becomes operational

The Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology of Paraguay (DMH, Dirección de Meteorología e Hidrología) is equipped with a station for real-time water level measurement on the Río Paraguay in Asunción. The station is based on the “Acronet” open-hardware project, developed by Fondazione Acrotec and aimed at increasing the density and sustainability of the monitoring networks, through an open approach in designing and managing the technological components of the hydrometeorological stations.

The automatic station on the Río Paraguay, which also integrates a rain gauge, allows real-time monitoring of hydro-meteorological conditions, strengthening the early warning system and improving preparedness in facing flood events.

The installation in Asunción raises from the Wirwina project, funded in 2018-19 by DG-ECHO, the European Union Department for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid and implemented by COOPI, WW-GVC and the CIMA Foundation in Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. The project was aimed at strengthening the Early Warning System in the three countries and one of its components has been dedicated to improving the sustainability of the hydro-meteorological monitoring network in Bolivia, strengthening the SENAMHI sensor laboratory and rehabilitating, with Acronet technology, non-functioning stations in La Paz and Oruro.
