Paraguay, disability: interventions in emergency situations

Improving the inclusion of people with disabilities in emergency situations. With this purpose, on 18th May, the Department of Concepción hosted a seminar under the framework of Cháke Ou project, a project which aims to strengthen the institutional and community capacity to prepare and coordinate operations in case of risk disaster in Paraguay.

The seminar was the first occasion to examine national and international laws and regulations concerning people with disabilities, with a particular focus on the architectural barriers. Secondly, they analyzed the different types of disability (physically, mentally and sensorially), thought about what it means to have them and, consequently, how to handle an emergency by keeping them present. Finally, they addressed the issue of renewing the approach to reducing disaster risks and inter-institutional coordination, starting with the awareness of the inclusion of people with disabilities.

The event was attended by representatives of local and national institutions as well as sectorial actors, volunteers and people with disabilities.

The Cháke Ou project was funded by ECHO (European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department) and implemented by COOPI in consortium with UNDP, WFP and Adra.
