In the region of Piura, 93,000 people have lost their homes as a result of heavy rainfall due to El Niño Costero.
 
Although the Peruvian government has responded to the emergency by providing water and sanitation services, critical deficiencies remain. Spread of diseases, water pollution, poor hygiene and an inefficient solid waste management system are still to be solved.

COOPI works in Piura to ensure that residents of temporary shelters have access to safe water and sanitation.

COOPI also provides access to health care facilities with separate entrances and locations for children, women and men, as well as access for people with motor disabilities, and train beneficiary families on good sanitation and solid waste management practices.
