COOPI ranked top ten in 2017 Risk Award

COOPI's project "Open data and web mapping platform to reduce disaster risk in Haiti" was among the top ten in the 2017 Risk Award.

The Risk Award is assigned to innovative plans and approaches for disaster risk reduction and disaster management. The prize is awarded every 2 years by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), the Global Risk Forum Davos (GRF) and the Munich Re Foundation.

For the 2017 edition entitled "Information and communication: innovative concepts and technologies for DRR and DRM",  COOPI presented a project of a web mapping platform and app which could help save many lives in the South-East Department of Haiti.

COOPI aims to use information and communication technologies as a tool to map and better understand the characteristics of the land, with reference to natural hazards, resources and vulnerabilities.

In particular, the open data and user friendly web mapping platform designed for Haiti should allow local and departmental institutions to identify their strengths and weaknesses, improving their crisis management abilities  and contributing to the effectiveness of preventive, preparedness and response measures. Furthermore, the mobile app will allow free and accessible information from smartphones.

Simulation in Haiti

The open data and user friendly web mapping platform has already been a success in other departments of Haiti as well as in many countries where COOPI operates.

"It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge that this initiative, which ECHO supported between 2014 and 2016, has been awarded in the top ten in the 2017 Risk Award" commented Androulla Kaminara, Director of the Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).

The 2017 Risk Award top ten projects are currently being displayed in Cancun (Mexico), during the UNISDR "Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction". The winner will be announced on May 24th.

"COOPI is very honoured of this acknowledgement and would like to thank the 2017 Risk Award Committee" - said President Claudio Ceravolo. "A special thanks also goes to every staff member that has made COOPI one of the top innovative NGOs in disaster risk reduction".
