Training for Innovation Brokers for Energy

Are you a professional already involved in the humanitarian or development sector? Are you willing to strengthen the response capacity of your organization in energy-related interventions?

This training opportunity is for you!

Background

The project SET4food (Sustainable energy technologies for food security in humanitarian contexts) was designed to respond to the shortage suffered by humanitarian actors of appropriate and organized tools and guidelines to assess the particular conditions in camps or settlements, identify appropriate technologies and deliver efficient solutions responding to specific needs. The second phase of SET4food (ECHO/ERC/BUD/2016/91004), co-funded by the European Union Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), is currently ongoing with the aim of enhancing efficient collaboration and synergies among humanitarian actors in the energy sector.

In this framework, representatives of the most active and relevant humanitarian organizations are invited to take part in the TRAINING FOR INNOVATION BROKERS FOR ENERGY

Energy is a cross-cutting issue in humanitarian contexts. Nevertheless, it has been recognized that there is a lack of capacity among humanitarian actors to identify and deliver appropriate and efficient energy solutions. This training is intended therefore to strengthen the response capacity of humanitarian actors in the energy sector, providing the participants with high-level multidisciplinary content to manage innovation aspects able to fill the mentioned gaps.

Target of the training

This training is designed for professional figures already involved in the humanitarian and/or development sectors, willing to improve his or her own competencies and deepening the knowledge on some specific topics related to energy. The trainees will be required to present one or two case studies to be used as base for testing the tools presented during the training. Those who will complete the training will be certified as International Brokers for Energy (IBEs) under the SET4food project.

Period and venue

The interactive one week in-person course will be held from February the 27th to March the 3rd 2017 in Milan, Italy.

It will be hosted by the University Politecnico in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32, Milan

Description

The training complements existing efforts made by the main humanitarian initiatives - among them, also the SAFE WG - to build capacity in the sector of energy, increasing the number of well trained staff able to provide effective support to energy-related initiatives in the field, which is a significant gap in humanitarian contexts. It will be focused on both theoretical and practical aspects of the implementation of appropriate technologies for improving access to energy.

Participants will receive in-depth training on new and existing tools and resources for planning, implementing and evaluating energy-related interventions, promoting innovation and synergies with other sectors. Specific topics will include technologies for cooking, food preservation, water pumping and purification in humanitarian contexts. Monitoring & Evaluation procedures and an Impact Evaluation Framework will be analyzed and discussed together during practical classes, making use of already available methodologies and adapting them to the needs of the humanitarian sector. Practical case studies will be also analyzed and participants will be trained on the use of a set of tools developed in the framework of the SET4food project. Subsequently, they will be invited to use the mentioned tools in their own field work and provide feedback on their efficacy.

The training will be held by professors and researchers from Politecnico of Milan and technical experts from humanitarian agencies active in the field of energy.

Further details on the program will be shared late December.

Outcomes

This training aims to increase the expertise on energy within humanitarian and/or development organizations. More specifically, it is intended to ensure that humanitarian organizations active in energy activities have properly trained staff who can significantly support the design, implementation and evaluation of sustainable energy-related field projects. Participants will be also given the tools to become trainers themselves on the covered topics, in this way extending the number of skilled personnel within their organization.
