Where We Work

Malawi

Since 1999 COOPI has been managing multi-sectoral interventions in Malawi, mostly concerning food security, energy and preparedness for natural disasters.

The agricultural development and reinforcement of food security are deemed to be fundamental in order to support an area subject to many kinds of natural disasters, including floods and droughts. Considering that the main source of income in Malawi is subsistence agriculture, improving food security and disaster prevention/preparadness/reduction is fundamental to support the country and the communities that COOPI works with.

The main activities carried out in the country include: the distribution of seeds; the rehabilitation and construction of irrigation systems; training farmers on cultivation techniques. Additionally: supporting Civil Protection structures through education and training courses aimed at enhancing and improving farmers’ knowledge and performance; the improvement and institutionalization of agricultural cooperatives; women’s empowerment and advocacy activities.
