Where We Work

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is the second most populated country in Sub-saharan Africa and fast population growth is putting a strain on natural resources. The economy is mainly based on pastoralism and agriculture, but the frequent droughts affecting the country expose it to food crises and food insecurity, and therefore they push migration flow.

Since 1995, COOPI has been taking action to improve food security among the most vulnerable groups, through the integration and diversification of livelihoods and the increase of production capacity. It has also facilitated access to clean water and has promoted efficient irrigation systems. Thanks to its projects, COOPI has improved sanitation in homes, schools and health centres and has disseminated good hygiene practices.

Finally, through the production of improved cooking stoves  and the promotion of solar energy, COOPI has not only encouraged the development of local economic initiatives, but it has also trained local communities to adopt a more integrated and careful approach to the protection of natural resources.
